2 Timothy

Second Timothy is a dying man’s final letter to the son he trained.

Paul is imprisoned in Rome and awaiting execution. Churches he helped establish are being unsettled by false teachers. Former companions have deserted him. And Timothy—the man Paul is counting on to carry the gospel forward—appears tempted to shrink back in fear, shame, and discouragement.

So Paul writes a final charge to his beloved son in the faith:

Guard what you have been given. Entrust it to people who will pass it on to others. Expect suffering as part of faithfulness rather than as proof that something has gone wrong. Continue in the Scriptures. Preach the Word even when people no longer want to hear it. Fulfill the ministry Christ has given you.

Second Timothy therefore gives the church more than a picture of Paul’s final days. It gives the church a biblical vision of pastoral ministry.

A faithful pastor is not defined primarily by personality, popularity, charisma, novelty, institutional success, or how closely he matches a congregation’s preferences. He is a man called to guard the gospel, depend on grace, endure hardship, handle Scripture accurately, pursue holiness, correct gently, preach faithfully, and finish his course.

This series is not intended to persuade the congregation to like or affirm its pastor. It is intended to place both pastor and congregation under the authority of Scripture. The congregation should learn how to recognize faithful ministry, how to encourage it, and how to sharpen its pastor when he falls short of the biblical standard.
